CFPC announces the new director for Certification and Examinations

dr brent kvern(January 22, 2018, Mississauga, ON) – The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Brent Kvern to the position of ‎Director, Certification and Examinations, Academic Family Medicine, effective April 2, 2018.

Dr. Kvern is a practising family physician with the Family Medical Centre at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and an associate professor of family medicine with the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Kvern received Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in 1986 and Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP) in 1996. Dr. Kvern is currently working towards completing his Master of Health Professions Education requirements at the University of Illinois.

In his new role, Dr. Kvern will provide direction and guidance to the CFPC’s certification and assessment standards with a focus on quality improvement, infrastructure, research, and collaboration with other national stakeholders in the ongoing development of physician competency assessment.

“Dr. Kvern brings considerable expertise and knowledge to this role—we are so fortunate to have him on board!” says Nancy Fowler, MD, CCFP, FCFP, the CFPC’s Executive Director, Academic Family Medicine. “His extensive experience in educational leadership will enhance the CFPC’s assessment and certification processes.”

Over the past 20 years Dr. Kvern has gained clinical and academic leadership experience at the regional, provincial, and national levels. Since 1998 Dr. Kvern has served as the Postgraduate Medical Education Program Director and the Enhanced Skills Program Lead at the University of Manitoba, where he played a key role in implementing a new family medicine residency curriculum, leading transformation in continuing medical education, and developing leadership courses focused on learner assessment. Dr. Kvern has held several leadership roles with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, and served as President from 2014 to 2015. Currently, Dr. Kvern serves as Site Director, Family Medicine, with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Nationally, he is Chair of the Central Examination Committee of the Medical Council of Canada.

With a history of active involvement in the CFPC, Dr. Kvern served as a member of the National Residency Accreditation Committee for six years and recently completed his term as Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board for the College’s journal, Canadian Family Physician.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) represents more than 36,000 members across the country. It is the professional organization responsible for establishing standards for the training and certification of family physicians. The CFPC reviews and accredits continuing professional development programs and materials that enable family physicians to meet certification and licensing requirements and lifelong learning interests. It also accredits postgraduate family medicine training in Canada’s 17 medical schools. The College provides quality services, supports family medicine teaching and research, and advocates on behalf of family physicians and the specialty of family medicine.
